Meet Daxton Wilde

In May of 2000, Scott and Sherry Wilde rushed their 4 year-old boy, Daxton, to Primary Children's Medical Center because of sever head pains. Doctors discovered a large cancerous tumor in Daxton's brain and diagnosed Daxton with a medulloblastoma. Daxton bravely battled cancer, experiencing numerous highs and lows, and rarely complained about any procedure or treatment. During his illness, Daxton spent much of his treatment at home with his family where he worked on writing and illustrating the book I'm a Super Hero with the help of his mother. His experiences demonstrated unfailing optmism and bravery. Daxton's legacy continues to provide readers with an understanding of cancer treatments from the perspective of a child. I'm a Super Hero is the recipient of numerous book awards, including the International Reading Association's Teacher's Choice Booklist for 2006.

  3. I just wanted to take a moment and let you know how touching I found this book that Daxton wrote. My son Mason was recently diagnosed with medulloblastoma, and this has been instrumental in helping him understand, and feel better about, what he is going through. He asks me to read this book to him many times a day, and I can feel the power of those words, lifting him up a little more each time. It never fails that when I read this book to Mason, he stops me over and over, saying: "that's just like me!" It's definitely empowering to know that there are others who have gone through this, too, and that he is not alone. He also likes hearing about it in super hero terms, and I think that makes him feel stronger.

I just wanted to let you know that it has made a difference in our lives, and I am so grateful that of all the things that could have been done with his time, Daxton chose to make a book, thinking of others who would be in his same position. What a sweet boy!
